Kevin Thau Joins Jelly
Back in 2008, I hired Kevin Thau to run all things mobile at Twitter. It’s almost five years later and I’m doing it again, this time for Jelly. Kevin Thau has almost twenty years of experience with mobile technologies and the start-up world. Early in his career, Kevin worked on introducing the world to the first graphics workstations, Internet email, photo messaging, mobile web browsers, SMS shortcodes, and version 1.0 of “App Stores” at Silicon Graphics, Software.com, Openwave, and Qpass in sales, marketing, product, and corporate development roles. Kevin is old-school, but he’s also been a leader in the mobile space throughout his career.
Kevin gave Twitter a lot—he built and managed the mobile engineering and design team responsible for launching SMS, Blackberry, iPhone, iPad, and Android applications. Later, as Vice President of Business & Corporate Development, Kevin created strategic partnerships with RIM and Apple to get Twitter deeply integrated in to every Blackberry, iPhone, iPad, and Mac. Kevin’s approach to partnerships is essentially, “How can we help?” and I’ve always loved that. At the beginning of 2012, Kevin took an idea he had for a fresh approach to music discovery, built a team, and led the development of Twitter #music.
Kevin has a unique skill set—he’s known for “getting stuff done” but he’s also one of the friendliest, most easygoing guys I’ve ever met. Over the years, Kevin and I found that we were in sync on much of our thinking—not just about product, but also about how a company should be run. Kevin understands that a company can be both a business and a platform for good. At Jelly, Kevin will serve as COO responsible for a wide array of business operations including product management, human resources, and revenue. Perhaps more importantly, Ben and I can be at our best knowing that Kevin is on our team helping us build and execute world class mobile products.
